The Express ended their regular season as the hottest team in the league. They were riding a seven game win streak going into the post season. They had only lost two games in all of February and March. Knocking off Oshawa and Saint John in the final days of regular season Windsor secured the third seed in the playoffs which meant a matchup with PEI’s Summer Side Storm.

These two teams hadn’t played against each other in 2013 and split their season series with two wins a piece. The Storm had home court advantage but Windsor managed to push their winning streak to eight games as they took game one 114-112 at Credit Union Place.

Guard Darren Duncan continued his outstanding play for Windsor tallying a triple double in the win. Duncan had 33 points shooting 18 of 20 from the foul line to along with 13 assists and 11 rebounds. Bench scoring was the difference as Summerside’s reserves were outscored by 19. Also pour free throw shooting by the Storm allowed their opponents to sneak back into the game. They shot 56% from the charity stripe as their 23 point first quarter lead disappeared over the final three frames. Windsor outscored the home team 67-42 in the second half to secure the victory.

In their second meeting the Storm would not be denied, evening the series at one game apiece with a 114 -98 win at home. Windsor shot a dismal 39% from the floor and committed 17 turnovers as their winning streak came to a halt. Canadian’s had nice games with Loiselle earning a double double with 10 points and 12 rebounds .Surmacz had 21 points including four three pointers.

With the series shifting back to Windsor, the Express’s shooting issues seemed to make the trip back down south as well. Summerside crushed Windsor by 28 points, leading from start to finish. The home team shot 36% from the floor and 63% from the foul line. Out rebounded and out played Windsor didn’t hit the 50 point mark till the third quarter. Duncan had 14 points and 11 dimes but only got to the foul line once. Surmacz had 10 points and 12 rebounds but more importantly made the most of his chances shooting over 50% from the field.

After two straight loses Windsor was facing elimination at home. Darren Duncan was not ready for his season to end. The 5”11 guard played like a giant in game four recording his second triple double of the series in a 124-122 double overtime thriller that forced a do or die game five. Duncan finished with 27 points, 16 rebounds and 13 assists including the last five points in the second overtime period to seal the win.

Eddie Smith scored 25 points off of the bench for the Express and added eight rebounds to go along with four dimes. Stefan Bonneau chipped in 20 points and hit a triple in the final seconds to force overtime. Surmacz, Mike Helms and Chris Commons all scored in double figures. The Storms bench was outscored 52-28 in the game and Summerside turned the ball over 24 times.

Game five in Summerside was a war but Windsor went nine of 31 from three falling to the Storm 109-103 and ending their season. Mike Helms had his best game of the series scoring 23 points dishing out five assists and tearing down four rebounds. Duncan had another 10 assist night to go with 12 points. DeAndre Thomas had 19 points and six rebounds for his career best game for Windsor. Summerside went to the line 14 more times than Windsor in the contest.

With that, the season was over for. Considering this was the franchise’s first season fans, players coaches and management should all be proud. Windsor seemed to be one of the only teams to figure out how to beat league champions London Lighting over the course of the regular season. Coach Bill Jones must be commended for putting his players in a position to excel and getting the most out of the talent he was given. If you need an example of how Jones can motivate a player, just look at Darren Duncan. The point guard led the Express a 14-5 record over the last part of the season and had 10 or more assists in each playoff game including two triple doubles.

The game of basketball is alive and well in Canada. It’s been a pleasure to cover the Windsor Express and based on what I’ve witnessed this year. The City of Roses has lots to be proud of.
